ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1. Install window ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
From the installation window you can install, reinstall and uninstall FTP
Browser. Make sure your system meets the system requirements before
installation. Select from the following list for a detailed description of the
procedure:
Installing for the first time
Installing over a previous installation
Uninstallation
The install directory field specifies where FTP Browser will be installed.
Installation status
Note: FTP defaults for username, password, download directory and proxy
information can be changed from the host, connection and FTP Browser
properties notebook pages. Select the help button on these pages for more
information.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2. System requirements ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Your system must meet the following minimal requirements in order to install
and use FTP Browser:
OS/2 Warp 3.0 ( or Merlin )
Presentation Manager
Workplace Shell
TCP/IP
2 Mb free disk space
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3. Installing for the first time ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The following steps are performed:
Copy the application files to your hard drive
Modify the system files
Create a Workplace Shell class
Create a template in the templates folder
Create a folder for FTP Browser objects
Enter the directory name where you would like FTP Browser installed. To start
the installation procedure, select install. After installation, check the
installation status window for any errors. If there were errors during the
install, refer to troubleshooting before attempting to install again.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 4. Installing over a previous installation ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The following steps are performed:
Copy the application files to your hard drive
Update the system files
Remove all FTP Browser objects and the WPS class.
A reboot will be required at this point
After the reboot the WPS class will be recreated
The template will be recreated in the templates folder
The sample folder and FTP Browser objects will be recreated
It is recommended that you save your FTP Browser objects before installation.
There are 2 methods to accomplish this. The most convenient method would be to
select store all objects from any existing FTP Browser object's popup menu.
This will store to a file located in your FTP Browser directory, all of your
objects' settings. After installation you can restore these objects using the
restore objects option from any existing FTP Browser object's popup menu. The
second method is using any third party product that can save and restore
Workplace Shell object archives.
When installing FTP Browser on top of a previous installation, the install
directory will reflect the current installation. To start the installation
procedure, select install.
Midway through the installation you will be required to reboot. During the
reboot several files that were locked will be replaced.
After installation, check the installation status window for any errors. If
there were errors during the install, refer to troubleshooting before
attempting to install again.
Note: The install directory can not be changed if FTP Browser is already
installed. If you would like to install to a different directory, you must
uninstall first.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5. Uninstallation ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The following steps are performed:
Remove the application files from your hard drive
Modify the system files
Remove the Workplace Shell class
Remove the template in the templates folder
Remove the folder that contains FTP Browser objects
Note: FTP Browser object storage files will not be removed.
When removing FTP Browser from your system, the fields in the installation
window will reflect the values of the current installation. Select Uninstall
when you are ready to remove FTP Browser. Check the installation status
window for any errors after program removal is complete. If there were errors
during uninstallation, refer to troubleshooting.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 6. Modifications to system files ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The installation program adds some application entries to your os2.ini file.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 7. Troubleshooting ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Installation problems
FTP Browser must be installed using the provided installation program
(install.exe). It is impossible to install by simply registering the
class and then create instances of this class. If the installation
program is not working on your system, please make sure your system meets
the minimum requirements and then send e-mail to rushton@netcom.ca
describing the ailment.
If an installation failed, please note the messages in the installation
status window. Then attempt to uninstall by selecting remove from the
installation window. Then make sure that the directory which you
attempted to install into is empty. If there are files in there that can
not be deleted because they are "being used by the system", you will have
to reboot your computer. When your system is back up, delete those files
and attempt to reinstall. It is crucial that these files are removed,
otherwise subsequent installation attempts could also fail.
Uninstallation problems
All FTP Browser objects should be removed from your desktop before
uninstalling, except for the FTP Site folder and the template that was
created in the templates folder during installation.
In certain cases there are some files that can not be removed because the
Workplace Shell has not released them. If you are installing over a
previous version these files will be updated the next time you reboot.
If you are removing FTP Browser you will have to remove these files
yourself. In order to remove these files make sure that all FTP Browser
objects have been removed, then shutdown and reboot OS/2 from another
drive. The files to remove are ftpbwps.dll and ftpbrows.hlp.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 8. Install directory ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Specifies where the program and data files are to be stored. This directory
will be created if it does not currently exist. It must include a drive letter
and a fully qualified path name without the trailing slash. This directory can
not be the root directory of any drive.
Example c:\tcpip\ftpbrows
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 9. Installation status ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Displays informational messages to the user during an installation procedure.
Every line of text displayed reveals whether a specific install function
completed successfully or failed. This can assist the user in tracing
installation problems, in which case the troubleshooting chapter should
referenced.
